Joe Lee Martinez was born April 3, 1942 in Las Animas, Colorado to Margarito and Romona (Sanchez) Martinez. He passed away on August 4, 2013 at the Bent County Healthcare Center at the age of 71.
Joe attended school in Las Animas until the 10th grade. He later joined the Army and was stationed in Germany. After the Army Joe worked at Fort Logan National Cemetery as the Groundskeeper before transferring to Fort Lyon in the early 1980 where he was a Firefighter and an Aide. He then retired in 2009 from the Fire Department at Fort Lyon. Joe enjoyed traveling to Sturgis and began collecting Stugis memorabilia. During the winter he would spend time in Yuma, Arizona and then return to Las Animas in the spring. He was a member of the VFW American Legion.
Joe is survived by his daughters, Lisa Franklin and husband, Leonard of Ooltewah, TN, and Brenda Morales and husband, Danny of Littleton, CO; siblings, Mary Ann Ramirez of Pueblo, CO, Laura Salas and husband, Shone of Ordway, CO, Fred Martinez of Kerrville, TX, Tim Martinez and wife, Bonnie of Las Animas, CO, and Juanita Martinez and husband, Greg of Grand Junction; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Michelle Shoemaker in 2000; brothers, Harold, Eddie, and Pete; and sister, Janie Laura.
